At Thong's advice I've begun looking around for weightlifting shoes to use instead of my (lovely) New Balance running shoes, and am looking at barefoot-style and traditional weightlifting-style. On the list so far are Inov8 Road-X Lite, New Balance Minimus, Nike Free, and Rogue 2011 (but not Vibrams! . I've just found an interesting forum post elsewhere that seems to cover the topic nicely, complete with video demonstrations. I know it's usually bad form to point a forum to a post in another forum, but I think in this case it's worth it: Weightlifting Shoes: What they are, why you need them, and where to get themAnyone have any opinions, corrections, clarifications?

Personally I would go for the Nike Free's and Inov8 route. Weight shoes do give you a good solid base for power lifting and general heavy lifts but I just prefer more 'feel' through the shoes, I go barefoot where possible (most gyms don't allow it) But its been years since my last pair of weight shoes and I am sure they have improved!

Yo. Welcome. The shoes you've listed aren't weightlifting shoes. As you might have worked out by now weightlifting shoes usually have a solid wooden sole and a raised heel. Weightlifting shoes aren't really suitable for most metcons but are good for lifting. Not vital however.
If you don't have a decent pair of shoes for your metcon work any thing off the list you gave would be perfect. I have some fivefingers but I appreciate they aren't for everyone. If you've got decent shoes and some money to burn then get some weightlifting shoes.

My current shoes are New Balance 1022 that I bought specifically for running. They're awesome for that, but far too squishy for lifting. Guess I'm hoping to get something that will do a good job as an all-round "CrossFit shoe" for the M,G&W components. Though I suppose there's nothing stopping me getting a thinner-soled shoe for M, G and basic lifting, and doing heavy lifting in my socks?

I wouldn't think you need to worry too much about lifting in barefeet or flat-ish shoes at first. Its all much of a muchness. As long as you dont have the big soft heal youll be alright. Think reebok are meant to be bringing out shoes that are suitable for everything. Not sure when they are coming out.

Just to second everything Feeno said Matt, any of the shoes you've mentioned above would be great for your met con, gymnastic and basic weightlifting work. I would start there and then possibly look at getting actually lifting shoes as your strength/Oly work progresses. And for lifting shoes I would look at Addidas, Doo-Win or Rouge.

As said above, if you want shoes that are specifically for Oly lifting, the Adidas or Do-Wins seem to be popular and effective. I've never splashed out on Oly shoes, I use Converse since they have hard, flat soles. For powerlifting, can't go wrong with bare feet. For metcons, if you want something minimal, the Merrell barefoots of NB Minimus are both good. Thanks for the replies all! Thanks to motirunner I got to try out some Merrell Barefoot (Trail Glove, I think?). Really like them. Though the regular gym-type socks I was wearing will need to be reconsidered.
